Everyone has an opinion about game engines. Unity vs Unreal debates are everywhere. Day 40 helped me see why this argument never really ends.
This post is part of my daily learning journey in game development.
I’m sharing what I learn each day — the basics, the confusion, and the real progress — from the perspective of a beginner.
On Day 40 of my game development journey, we discussed Unity vs Unreal Engine in class and how to choose an engine realistically.
What I tried / learned today
I learned that there is no single best game engine for everything.
We talked about how different engines serve different goals:
- Unreal Engine is powerful and well-suited for PC and AAA-style games
- It offers high-quality graphics by default
- Unity is easier for beginners and widely used for mobile game development
- Unity is lighter and quicker to set up for small projects
The main takeaway was simple:
Engine choice depends on the type of game you want to make.
What confused me
At first, I was confused about why people argue so much about engines.
I didn’t understand:
- Why one engine can’t do everything
- Which engine I should personally focus on
- The difference in graphics pipelines
It felt like choosing the “wrong” engine would ruin everything.
What worked or finally clicked
Things became clearer when I understood this:
- Unreal is heavier, but very powerful
- Unity is lightweight and flexible
- Beginners usually need simplicity first, not maximum power
I also realized that tools matter less than fundamentals. Learning game logic, design thinking, and problem-solving is more important than the engine itself.
One lesson for beginners
- Decide whether you want to make PC or mobile games first
- Choose an engine based on that goal
- Or learn both engines at a basic level and decide later
- Don’t get stuck in engine wars
- Skills matter more than tools
Slow progress — but I’m building a strong foundation.
If you’re also learning game development,
what was the first thing that confused you when you started?
See you in the next post 🎮🚀
